FAQ’s

What are self tanners?

All self-tanning formulas use an ingredient called dihydroxyacetone, or as most will refer to as DHA. This ingredient will create an appearance by developing a beautiful brown color on the first layers of your skin, as an end result, will be similar to a real tan achieved by increasing skin melanin levels through exposure to the Sun/UV.
DHA is limited to the upper top layer of the skin and is a reaction between DHA, skin proteins and oxygen, which will produce brown compounds. In most cases your development of color will take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours and will continue to darken through a 24 hour period to your final results. Your DHA color will last between 5 to 8 days and begin to fade as your top layer of skin naturally sheds. The length of your DHA Tan will depend on the personal care of the skin and how well you moisturize to prevent excessive natural exfoliation.

Will using a spray tanning system protect me from sunburn?

The answer is no. There are no “built-in” sunscreens in spray tans. If you are going to venture into the sunshine for an extended period of time, you must protect yourself with a sunscreen, no matter how many times you have spray tanned.

How dark can a spray tan make me?

While all skin is different, the easiest way to answer this question is that everyone can get nearly any level of color they desire, depending on the type of skin you have. Some people may be very dark after a single session, and others may only be slightly golden. These people will need to use the system multiple times in order to build up a darker color as their skin becomes used to the pigments. Consult our trained staff as to the expected outcomes of your sessions based on your skin type.

Are the tanning solutions used in spray tanning safe?

The FDA has approved all the solutions we use, and there has been nothing found that is harmful in any way. This is not to say that all tanning solutions are safe, however. Many other systems utilize solutions that have not been tested, and some can contain up to 40 chemicals that may be potentially harmful to your skin. Always ask if the system that you will be using is FDA certified.

How long does a spray tan last?

Spray tans can last various lengths of time based upon how you prepare your skin before the session and how you take care of it afterward. In general, most spray tans last between 5 and 10 days, but after your skin gets used to spray tanning, you should hold the color longer.

What can I do to make my spray tan last longer?

The length of time your tan will last depends on how well you prepared before the session, and how you take care of your skin after the session. The most important aspect is to exfoliate before the session. The shallower the dead skin layer is, the longer it will take to fully build up and shed off. This means that the more perfectly you exfoliate your skin before spray tanning, the more even your tan will be and the longer it will last before fading. Additionally, moisturizing your skin every day will prevent premature exfoliation through drying. Ask which exfoliants and moisturizers are suggested to get the best results.

Is spray tanning good for fair skinned people who have trouble traditionally tanning?

Spray tanning is perfect for people who have skin that is problematic for traditional tanning. If you burn easily, and have had trouble in the past, the spray tanning system is probably a perfect solution for you to get that golden color you desire.

How long after spray tanning can I shower?

We suggest not showering for at least eight hours after a session. This will give the solution more time to work before being washed from the surface of your skin. If there is a bronzer in the solution, you will want to avoid sleeping in a bed or other materials that may be stained by the solution until you shower.

Do I need to shave my arms and legs before a session?

It is suggested that you shave areas of your body that you shave regularly. You do not need to shave your body hair before spray tanning. Even though you will notice drops of solution on your hair of your arms and legs after the session, this is simply excess and can be wiped off.

What if I have a bald spot?

If you have a bald spot, you may want to not wear the shower cap that we provide. The solution will not harm your hair, but it will get it slightly wet in this case. Tanning your bald spot is suggested to create a natural look.

Will my spray tan results always be identical?

No, tanning is different every time because your skin is a living thing that is effected by many elements. These elements can be anything from what you are eating to how dry the air is outside.

Does the solution harm your eyes?

We suggest closing your eyes during the session as there is little research as to the outcome of the solution coming in contact with your mucous membranes. Our staff will show you the proper technique to protect your eyes.

Does the solution you use leave a bad smell on my skin?

Absolutely not. After you towel off, you will notice a faint odor, but nothing unpleasant.

Can I go swimming after my spray tan?

We advise to wait at least 24 hours before going swimming, and remember that chlorinated water bleaches your tan very easily. This means as little exposure to chlorinated water as possible is suggested to keep your tan long lasting and beautiful.

Can I spray tan if I am pregnant?

There is no current evidence that it poses any danger to spray tan while you are pregnant.

Will the spray tanning solution from a spray tan application come off my clothes and bed sheets?

If you are using a spray solution with a cosmetic bronzer, you might experience that some of the bronze color will rub off on the clothing or bed sheets. To minimize the chance of the bronzer transferring to your clothing, we recommend that you always wear loose-fitting dark clothes. This will help hide any transferring of bronzer until you wash the clothes you were wearing. Refraining from physical exertion until after waiting 6-8 hours to shower will help minimize your transferring any bronzer to your clothes through sweating. Our solution bronzer is water-soluble and will, in most cases, wash out of your clothing or sheets once washed.

What if I am unhappy with my spray tan?

Tans take 24 hours to fully develop, if you are unhappy after this time you need to make an appointment to come back in right away. Your tech needs to visually see your tan and assess what the issue is. Every appointment has a color consultation and the tech can not be responsible if you choose a color that is too dark for your skin type. If there is an error in application a tech will be happy to re-tan you.
